I’m staring at my fingers as I type this. Something seemingly vain, but done wholly unintentional. My eyes are simply drawn to my nail varnish du jour. There’s something inherently magnetic about the mint green polish (which would explain its sudden popularity in the blogosphere especially – it’s unconventional. Fluorescent, but not. A creamy pastel, yet not pastel enough to paint an Easter egg. Feminine, without having to be pink. Chanel is to be blamed for this wildfire trend. Models sported the highly sought after shade, “Jade,” on perfectly manicured nails down the Fall 2009 runway. It was the first shade of its kind available in nail lacquers, created by Peter Philips, the creative director for Chanel’s Fall 09 show. After its release for Fashion’s Night Out at the company’s SOHO store, other brands followed quickly in suit to capture the unique color. From bluer hues – like China Glaze's "For Audrey” – to the true, mint greens (Illamasqua’s “Nudge” is a beautiful color), mint green varnish is that notorious “it” color.
Which brings me in full circle to my typing fingers (and why I can’t stop staring). It’s an undeniably beautiful shade (currently sporting Revlon’s No. 85 “Minted”). It looks lovely with a summer tan. It does, however, take some time getting used to – mint green is rather unconventional for the likes of me, who have remained loyal to ubiquitous pinks, burgundies, taupes, and murky purples my entire eighteen years of living. I can’t quite decide if it’s for me yet – have I succumbed to the trend simply because the little bottle of green was just so irresistible? Perhaps.
