With all the 80s sampling that has gone round these past few years, it’s so suiting that musicians like Au Revoir Simone, Starf*cker, and Little Boots pay full homage to the artists of yesteryear. Nouvelle Vague may have been providing a French-lounge restyling of New Wave since 2004, but BuffetLibre goes the extra mile by re-inventing artists such as Madonna, Blondie, and XTC in a wide variety of genres. The first Rewind Project consists purely of such 80s tunes, but the newest second string of music has expanded its influences from the 70s to now; it’ll be exciting to see where the third Rewind goes with their first premiere single already listed on the site. The best part about this time-travel experience is that it doesn’t cost a dime, as the site offers free downloads of the covers.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://plaster-mag.blogspot.com/2010/08/rewind-fast-forward.html' title='Rewind. [Political] ideologies aside, it’s difficult enough attempting lasting makeup via blotting throughout the first hour or two of dancing elbow-to-elbow in a sea of sweaty people. But to do that whilst in the midst of summer whilst the oh-so-convenient heat wave? No, it’s not a newfound, obscure north European nation, but a small, innovative cosmetics manufacturer whose sole mission is to keep makeup looking as perfect as the moment you finished applying it for 16 hours. Sixteen. Whole. Hours.

It goes without saying that the Dance! Makeup Finish looks absolutely tempting. Designed for the very active (read: under extraneous, sweat-inducing circumstances including, but not limited to sunbathing on beaches, boardwalking, working out, clubbing), it guarantees the all-nighter (ooh, night-crawlers like myself) to party all night sans touch-ups and excessive re-blotting that often leads to cakey-ness. With its surface cooling technology that holds temperature to avoid melting makeup, it helps control excess shine and makeup mishaps. At $19 - $29, darling, this bottle of magic is well worth its job.

Excuse me, but what are makeup meltdowns again? It’s a brilliant concept where you create your own body art by either selecting a template from their gallery and customizing it, or by uploading your own design. Besides being easily expendable and disposable at your mood or for various occasions, StrayTats are practical for those on the border about committing to one design forever. The words permanent and forever are daunting; the future is unforeseeable, and as average human beings, we’re susceptible to change. As significant a design is at the time, what if we grew tired of it? Or made a mistake?

Whereas most would have posted the design and stared at it for ages, debating (or simply jumped the gun), StrayTats allow for you to actually wear the design. Try it for a few months. Adjust its positioning on your body. Grow into it, and love it. Even if you do decide against it some time later, they’re still lovely during bathing suit season. Peeking out of somewhere, drawing interest elsewhere…

We like it scandalous.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://plaster-mag.blogspot.com/2010/07/temporary-tattoos-are-cool-period.html' title='Temporary Tattoos Are Cool. I chose black partially because that was what was in the trash! Also every girl loves a little black cocktail dress.

In the spirit of transformation, how have you yourself transformed in this project?

After years designing for the mainstream fashion industry, I realized how probable it is that people are suffering in the process of the norm of "fast & cheap fashion". I left the industry and began reading up on the subject and noticed every time I was studying this issue- I'd look down at what I was wearing and almost everything I owned was made overseas. I majorly cleaned house and only kept thrift store clothes, clothing I've made, and I think I just had one shirt that was made in the USA. It seemed a bit extreme- but it felt really good at the same time.

Are the clothes functional, conceptual, or a little of both?

All of the clothes are definitely functional! However, I created this little mini collection as more of an extension to my artwork.

Easing the Transition

For two consecutive years the fashion industry, the blogosphere, and retail (about a year later) was assaulted with nineties punk and grunge. Dirty leather, shredded tees. Doc Martens and similar Chloe’s with an incredulous wedge. Studs. Spikes. Anything studded was chic – from the bottoms of Alexander Wang bags to vintage shorts. In fact, the more the merrier, and the more lethal, the better! A good number of the fashion-conscious (read: the majority) sacrificed their wardrobe to X-Acto knives and endured bleeding fingertips for stud-fests galore. It would be an understatement if I generalized that the world of fashion was obsessed with studs.

And then came the runway collections of spring 2010. From dirty grunge grew pretty chiffons and femininity. I was finally able breathe a sigh of relief as the rest of the cult clutched their studded boots and shoes with earnestness. However much I thanked the fashion gods for the passing of the trend, I could not gloat.

I hold the cure. Rather, Deux Lux does. Behold, the Raina Hobo in clay. ‘Tis one hundred and twenty eight dollars for your guaranteed ease of transition into the optimistic fashions that have [finally] resurfaced. Though the taupe colored bag isn’t your usual black, it’s reasonable enough (at least it isn’t floral or pink!), and the grommets add that element of edginess to satisfy your addiction to produce an accessory of edgy sophistication.

It’s hard to let go of years’ worth of dedication. I suppose this dogged adoration for asymmetry was a response to the feng-shui/zen/balance trend of hipster America. Fashion rebelled, and thus the birth of the imbalanced silhouettes. The [re-]debut of the one-shouldered, Grecian dress was but a dipping of toes into the water. Tame, but a small step nonetheless into the cosmos of the chicly lop-sided. Fast forward a few years and it’s all become quite fantastical. Rachel Allegra pieces with shredded trains, uneven hem-lines, and missing sleeves.

The latest foray in asymmetry seems to employ clever pleating and draping for an unusual neckline; the trend has finally trickled down to our favorite commercial stores. Subtle, but there. Leave it to Helmut Lang to perfect the silhouette (I’ve tried on one too many inferior versions that only looked (a) lumpy or (b) like the asymmetry was unintentional…wait, was it?). Helmut Lang’s Peel Print Jersey Drape Top takes advantage of the signature, single asymmetric pleat at the side that creates the well-loved asymmetric drape across the front and along the collarbone.

It’s undoubtedly chic. But it also doubles as a conversation starter. The bronze, brown, and cream marbled print make seems to be a lovely homage to an earthy palette. Or is it the designer’s interpretation of a favorite galactic nebulae somewhere in this unknown universe?

Helmut Lang Peel Print Jersey Drape Top | Intermix, $240

Plum-y, Vamp-y Lip Balm – Who Knew?

I’m guilty of [frequently] browsing Sephora.com for its latest stock of beauty products (I’ve only recently become quite the makeup magpie, and window-shopping online has, for now, satisfied this thirst for more). It usually goes something likes this in my head. Pretty. Ooh. Want. Ooh. Until my greedy little eyes beheld Fresh’s new (and exclusive!) Sugar lip treatment.

This is where I did a double take. Lip balms and treatments are always synonymous with lovely neutral peaches, nudes, or pinks. Maybe a sheer, sheer red if you’re lucky (but then that ventures into the realm of lipsticks). But a lip balm in a deep, vamp-y plum? There would be one, and only one: Fresh Sugar Plum Tinted Lip Treatment with SPF 15. I got a sneak-peek at their upcoming song “Shut Up”, a very catchy jam, and my expectations are high for their new set of recordings. This band is one that’s not so much in-your-face, but for sure more of a relaxed group of musicians who are not above playing arcade games or a sense of humor. So as not to encourage her love of handbags, I was jokingly asked not to compliment front-girl Ashley Bowman’s style out loud anymore, but behind this cute chick are vocals that can pack a punch in songs like “Another Day.” Although their sound reminds me of an updated Bif Naked, each band members come from a mix of influences, from REO Speedwagon to techno. But since that act may encroach upon some violation of proper flag etiquette/law – especially if there’s lipstick or gloss involved – it’s far safer to declare your love with the Lulu Guinness Stars & Stripes Snakeskin Lips Clutch, designed and made available exclusively for her beloved US clientele. It’s cheeky, maybe a little tacky, but wholly patriotic. We worship the Union Jack, so why not embrace our own American flag? We Americans fail to fully realize and appreciate it for what it’s worth: the American flag is an icon on its own, symbolic for all that this nation has been through in the name of freedom and democracy.

But really. It’s okay to carry it around even after our demise in the FIFA World Cup. We’re all capable of being good sports, beaten ego aside, and Independence Day is but a few days away. Or should I say “Oi!”? Welcome to the fictional locale of Holwenstall, a place that is home to an ensemble cast of young degenerates and members of counterculture galore in Mike Cuenca’s original web series Oblivion. My heart lit up to discover this episodic dramedy that has brought the likes of punks-past into the present day without sacrificing any cool. Cuenca, who has written, produced, and directed the series in LA, presents storylines that will please any hip-at-heart individual. From the silly plots of trying to score rock show tickets to the serious stories of arson and drugs, I was for sure captivated enough to whip through the three available episodes.

Each episode features a full 22-minute length, which is much longer than other web series’ standard of 3-5 minutes; the audience is given time to sit back and familiarize. However, it doesn’t take long to realize that this is a full-blown art project with delicate attention paid to every design, music, and editing choice. Oblivion captures trends and practices from every decade of the 20th century, while still maintaining its own personal flavor.

What I dig most about the series is its impressive ability to give every character (of which there are many) his or her own unique style. Even while facing financial hardships, these delinquents capture a variety of looks and fashions: 50s housewives, New Wave chicks, sleek & simple vegans, and snazzy cool cats. I’m totally excited for new episodes beginning August 16th, and with such a sour economy at hand, I’m even tempted to jump into my own punk attire and follow suit.

The Shimmer Shines Bright

The electrifying sounds of The Shimmer captured me from the minute I heard the track “Headlights”. The song opens with the dark vocals of singer David R. This collective features a small, but expanding group of musical artists that host their albums on a “donations-only” basis on their website. Headed by Renaissance man, Robness, the groups in the club feature instrumental tunes to post-apocalyptic rock influenced not only by musical geniuses but scientific prodigies like Tesla and Einstein. Their philosophy is this: ditch the “vampiristic labels” in order to focus on the craft itself. As Robness put it, “We intend to be a label that will document the new millennia of musicians who gave up a lost formula and started a new path of musicianship.”

It seems like a simple enough task, but The Masoch Club intends to do it with style. With profits out of the picture, I asked Robness about the style – by cutting out the image system, how do you maintain a unique, musical identity that each artist has? He remarked that although it is easy with today’s technology to warp one’s image in any direction, that is must be done with an all-around attitude. “Beings such as David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Michael Jackson, Marylin Manson have showed us that image, music, emotions are all interconnected. The more senses you hit, the more powerful the experience,” said Robness.

Already veterans to the legendary clubs of Hollywood such as The Roxy, Whiskey, and Knitting Factory, The Masoch Club has strong plans to move forward with more shows to serve their connection with the audience. With all their music hosted on the site for free, it’s worth a listen, and keep your ears open for new sounds as The Masoch Club plans to make new additions of varied musicians with strong, new philosophies on the music scene.

It’s a Wrap

Each of Chan Luu’s designs reflects a story inspired by worldly cultures or the purity of nature. Her wrap bracelets, in particular, are a tribute to both sides of the spectrum. Accessories are but a manmade necessity, yet when crafted into a design so simplistic and natural, the aesthetic is raw and its homage to nature is un-hindered. With several of variations of the basic leather wrap bracelet with stones design – brown leather with turquoise, tamba leather with graduated rose gold, clear quartz on black leather, etc. – its easily made into an individual statement. Layer it with other Chan Luu bracelets or other bangles; wrap it three or more times around the wrist - create a unique combination of bracelets.

It’s a timeless accessory, however unconventional it is from the ubiquitous pearls or silver chains. The leather wrap is easily carried over from spring, into summer, into fall, into winter. It’s an effortless finishing touch, and seamlessly incorporated into any wardrobe. The wide range of celebrities who are fans is mere evidence of Chan Luu’s understanding of creating a piece for every woman: Lady Gaga’s favorite look is created by layering the sterling silver nugget on white leather with h gold vermeil nuggets on white leather; Megan Fox’s is the turquoise wrap bracelet with sterling silver skulls; Jennifer Lopez’s is Chan Luu’s classic wrap with chain dangles woven throughout the bracelet.

There’s No Shame in Being an Outsider

“We believe Ethical fashion should just look like fashion.” That is the statement made on the opening page of Outsider’s website. Immediately, I love it.

Outsider clothing label has ticked all of the boxes when it comes to ethical clothing design. While working with designers such as Ann-Sofie Back, Jessica Ogden and Susan Cianciolo in New York, along with companies including Ted Baker and Debenhams, Londoner Noorin Khamisani learned soon enough everything there is to know about the fashion industry. Noorin was able to understand the impact of garment production on the lives of the people involved in the manufacturing, and after not being pleased with what she saw, she decided to take things into her own hands. A woman after my own heart! Thus, came Outsider. Outsider captures the beautiful & sensible design that women want to wear while maintaining an ethical balance during the design process. When I ask Noorin what Outsider’s “ultimate mission” is she simply says, “People should be able to buy fashionable clothes without worrying about the impact on the world. We want to create the solution. We hope that in the near future the customer’s decision to buy ethically is no longer niche, but norm.” Thank you, Outsider!

Festival Style–a–Go-Go!

It’s that time of the year that England has been waiting for…when the rain clears, the sun comes out and the Festival Season begins. I cannot wait! Years ago “Festival Season” began with only 2 – 3 festivals per summer, such as the major Glastonbury. But as years have gone on, festivals have popped up almost weekly during the English summer! So much so that “Festival Style” is now a term we hear come around every June. Started by the likes of Kate Moss and her Hunter Wellies at Glastonbury, Festival Style combines a Bohemian look with an “anything goes” attitude such as girls donning bright colored wigs and glittered face paints. It is so sought after for the summer that websites such as ShopBop and New Look, have sections of their sites dedicated solely to Festival attire to help you find that perfect look.

For something sexy I would chose the Mara Hoffman Braid Back Tank, paired with the Sass & Bide Heart in a Cage Jacket for night time breeze, and the Pamela Love Heishi Bead Necklace with daisy dukes. For rainy days, Hunter Rain Boots and for sunshine a pair of Dolce Vita sandals (that is if you don’t mind getting them dirty)!

Summer time is here! Something seemingly vain, but done wholly unintentional. My eyes are simply drawn to my nail varnish du jour. There’s something inherently magnetic about the mint green polish (which would explain its sudden popularity in the blogosphere especially – it’s unconventional. Fluorescent, but not. A creamy pastel, yet not pastel enough to paint an Easter egg. Feminine, without having to be pink.

Chanel is to be blamed for this wildfire trend. Models sported the highly sought after shade, “Jade,” on perfectly manicured nails down the Fall 2009 runway. It was the first shade of its kind available in nail lacquers, created by Peter Philips, the creative director for Chanel’s Fall 09 show. After its release for Fashion’s Night Out at the company’s SOHO store, other brands followed quickly in suit to capture the unique color. From bluer hues – like China Glaze's "For Audrey” – to the true, mint greens (Illamasqua’s “Nudge” is a beautiful color), mint green varnish is that notorious “it” color.

Which brings me in full circle to my typing fingers (and why I can’t stop staring). It’s an undeniably beautiful shade (currently sporting Revlon’s No. 85 “Minted”). It looks lovely with a summer tan. It does, however, take some time getting used to – mint green is rather unconventional for the likes of me, who have remained loyal to ubiquitous pinks, burgundies, taupes, and murky purples my entire eighteen years of living. I can’t quite decide if it’s for me yet – have I succumbed to the trend simply because the little bottle of green was just so irresistible? Perhaps.

But it is, nonetheless, quite lovely to look at.

Summer Playlist!

Everyone’s talking about this summer’s anthems. If you’ve had your radio on you’d know Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” is eating up the title battling with the likes of Ke$ha’s “Your Love is My Drug” and Gaga’s “Alejandro”, but should the top ten be the sole basis of a summer anthem? What makes a perfect summer song? It seems to be a delicate mixture of a few key components, but if all are met then songs of all genres can push-and-shove to be the voice of those heated months. “The song” should be about summer, make dance happen, be sexy, or have some light emotions. So, as I compile my summer playlist, here are a select few, new and old, that can fall into that category. Surely, you’ll find one summer jam to add to your own playlist.

       “Empathy” – Crystal Castles

In summer of 2008, I was hearing “Crimewave” everywhere. Two years later, Crystal Castles have released an awesome album that is orchestrated way better from the first. While every song seamlessly flows into the next, my summer pick is “Empathy”. Although dark, it has the perfect mindset and beat for a sultry night out; alongside the perfect summer cocktail this song provides a beat that can seduce anyone into nightcap situation. As usual, the lyrics are a bit undecipherable, but if you look them up it adds a whole new layer to the song.

       “Summer Summer” – Loft

Incredibly ridiculous and 90s, but what’s summer without Reggae? This song has an incredible video with graphics that, sadly, were thought to be awesome back in the day. With a chorus that sings “Summer, summer, summer. I wish it could be everyday”, this song is undeniably an summer choice for all time.

“Summertime” – Billie Holiday

Definitely old school, but who can say no to the sultry scratch of Billie Holiday in her version of the song? Whenever I listen to this, for some reason I am immediately thrown into a tacky and delightful Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights. It’s cool to know that Holiday sung about the timeless “livin’ easy” ideals of summertime, but also adds an eerie undertone about parents and how “nothin’ can harm you” when they’re standing by.

       “Summerboy” – Lady Gaga

I have my own reservations about Lady Gaga, but it always upsets me that this song didn’t really offer itself up to the summer months. While still mainstream, this song offers another side of Lady Gaga’s presentation: relaxed and real. Let your “sunglasses cover up your green eyes” and throw “Alejandro” aside for a second.

“Down in L.A. (Shazam Version)” – Munk

This is a fun dance song that’s been around for a little bit, and is equally fun to sing along with. The video takes place in a swimming pool, and it’s all about L.A.—the capital of summer.

“Acapella (Friends Electric Mix)” – Kelis

This single, released a few months ago, can stand alone as an amazing dance song, but this remix adds a really good sexy build-up to it that adds an extra spice necessary for summer. For anyone looking for summer love, I suggest this song to serve as inspiration.

“Domino Dancing” – Pet Shop Boys

An 80s throwback at heart, but endlessly my favorite summer song. In the spirit of summer, The Pet Shop Boys ask “Remember when we felt the sun? A love like paradise, how hot it burned.” and matched the lyrics with an impeccably stylish video with all the essentials: hot people, love triangles, beaches, timeless fashion and hot weather. With a bunch of brilliant remixes and covers inspired by the song, what more could anyone ask for?

      “Vital Signs” – Tame Impala

Although the original version by Midnight Juggernauts isn’t that old, Tame Impala has made a really fun cover that offers a psychedelic vibe reminiscent of summer kings, The Beach Boys. This song was made for watching the surfers come in from the waves and enjoying your favorite brew on the sand.

Save the Date...

I’m nearly bursting at the seams.

I publicly confessed my undying love for Mulberry (specifically, the highly-coveted Mulberry Alexa, pictured here) on one of my many media outlets; and when I received an email a week or so later from a representative at the Mulberry UK Head Offices commending my piece (straight from headquarters?!), you can only imagine the most ladylike manner of celebration that followed: champagne with the ladies, and little laughs of bashful pride.

Looking back now my giddy celebration of my recognition from Mulberry’s office itself, I could only imagine how un-ladylike I was. The store’s décor is that of the early 1990s underground club scene in New York City; I never thought I’d see anything like it in a retail environment, with its neon lighting and futuristic feel. Not to mention, upon entrance, I am greeted by two young gentlemen who are not only polite, but are two of the best dressed men I have spotted in London!

Kokon to Zai has two locations in London, as well as one in Paris. My favorites include the KTZ Priss Blue Print Dress with Pearls and the Marjan Pejoski SPW Riders Jacket for women (featured), along with Long Faux Leather Jacket for men.

As a close friend of mine put it, “Kokon to Zai is the best outrageous London designers’ dream!”

Flea Fashion

Every Sunday, Fairfax High School in West Hollywood transforms from an education center to a full-fledged flea market called the Melrose Trading Post. If you walk around to the other vintage shops in the neighborhood, you'll soon realize that basic tees can run $20 and upward; the Trading Post offers a nice alternative where you can snag one-of-kind tees and other items for an average price of $5. They've also got some stellar furniture and bizarre trinkets that would make for cool conversation pieces if you're ever in an ice-breaker jam.

Like any flea market, the collection of stuff is diverse and ever-changing, but so is the crowd. Yeah, there are the eccentric old Hollywood cougars (most likely clad in actual cougar-print wear) or various drug-addled hippies, but to the discerning eye you can pick up a wide-range of youthful trends. This weekend, there were gaggles of sun-dressed, high school girls wearing ornate flowers in their hair and pale, skinny-jean guys with Dylan McKay hair. If you check it out, it's common to bump into celebrities hiding behind their shades. Even the not-so-clandestine Kathy Griffin was just there the other weekend filming her estate sale for this season of the The D-List.

Made Her Think...

There’s something about Made Her Think rings, the Siren Knuckle Buster from the Classic Collection in particular, that makes it especially covetable. The name itself is representative of everything it is: sexy, feminine, and dangerous. Jewelry is usually one thing or another – either feminine or androgynous. It is, or it isn’t. Nothing in between.

Yet Made Her Think has mastered that perfect balance – a juxtaposition of the delicate with the tough. A knuckle ring is often difficult to wear without looking like a fashion victim or some sort of punk-rock-chic aspirant; Made Her Think’s version is elegant, and unobtrusive, laying ever so delicately across the fingers to catch glimpses of light. At the same time it’s edgy and chic, adding a touch of je-ne-sais-quoi cool to any ensemble.

Now it’s simply a matter of deciding the color to get it in…

Native Faces in all the Right Places!

Native Faces have been spicing up the London party scene with their talented face painting skills to add a bit of glitz and glam to the dance floor! I got a chance to ask creator of Native Faces, Lauren Jarmey, all about the new craze the people are waiting hours in line for!

How did you come up with the idea for Native Faces?

It all started with myself and some close friends decorating our own faces before big nights out, we then started doing friends of friends and popping round people's houses before they went out. Anyway, in the movie, Kevin’s best friend is this sweet little device called a “Talkboy”. It’s this intense looking, voice-recorder that could manipulate voices to fit whatever needs Kevin saw fit when getting into jams. My synapses clicked, and I remembered I totally put this thing on my Christmas list. Doing a bit of research, I discovered that the coolness factor of the toy in the film led to its actual production by Tiger Electronics, spawning several next-gen versions of it. Never fear ladies, they released a very cute, pink “Talkgirl”.

I got to thinking, when we were kids playing with these toys, were we actually at the front of this whole “sexting” revolution? I mean, Macaulay Culkin just uses the thing to record his naked uncle in the shower only to later use it to his benefit. We can’t pretend people aren’t doing the same thing with recordings they grabbed with their cell phones or whatever. So the fact that pretty much anyone’s app-tastic phone has the capability to become its own Talkboy, what are kids playing with today that will influence the next technological wave? And does this mean we essentially are the same kids we were seventeen years ago?

The Lace Bodysuit

I have a particular penchant for anything reminiscent of my ballet days – chignons, tights, bodysuits – for anything the ballerina wore epitomized elegance and femininity in my childhood mind. And still the aforementioned hold a special place in my heart.

A good amount of bodysuits (or leotards, what have you) are secreted in one section of the my dresser drawers: old bits I refuse to let go of to hold purely for memory’s sake, sexier versions for random dance showcases, and American Apparel’s version – the one with the rather suggestive contrast zipper down the center – saved for lazy summer days or lounging about on the beach. Already the notorious AA unitard seems scandalous enough when worn with high-waisted denim shorts.

Cue the arrival of the lace bodysuit.

It’s provocative and edgy, undeniably so. Perhaps borderline improper in some standards in its unabashed reference to negligee, but its ballerina past is its own redemption. Worn on its own it’d be better suited for the bedroom, but when paired with high waisted shorts or a bandage skirt, or tucked into high-rise slim pants, the sex appeal is diminished for an end result of sexier sophistication. A fitted blazer or leather jacket thrown into the mix adds for more modesty, and an elegant updo draws the attention away from the lace bodice.

I promise I do have a point here. Okay, so you’re thinking, this is sad, and wasn’t she a little old to be marking up the stylish blog of Plaster? However, if you give this talented, cute, old lady some thought, it doesn’t take much to realize how her role as the slutty Blanche Devereaux in the uber-syndicated Golden Girls, gave assistance to a female sexual revolution. If you look back at Rue and the other girls it’s clear that their wit and sass made them forerunners in today’s trend of rising female comedians.

It also should be mentioned that this chick had style. Blanche took a step away from all the other Golden Girls and put on a risqué show of sensual clothing and glitz that could rival those in Dynasty. Looking back on her character’s use of flamboyant colors, ornate jewelry, and over-sized outerwear it doesn’t seem that she was too far off from the fashion fads of today.

Whether you’re a Dorothy, Rose, Sophia, or a Blanche it’s hard not to appreciate this gal’s humor. They’re simple. Timeless. Classic. Versatile. It takes less than a second to throw one on – no mirror necessary – and the end result is always effortless. Nothing is sexier than a woman in a white tee thrown casually over a pair of slim-fit jeans. Or tucked into a high-waisted bodycon skirt; the possibilities truly are endless.

It’s not surprise, then, that the ladies behind Wildfox Couture have a cult following. Childhood friends Emily Faulstich and Kimberely Gordon are the designers behind this vintage-inspired brand, officially debuting in Los Angeles in 2006. Their inspiration comes from many: vintage t-shirts, California, music, sleepovers, beautiful books, dreams, fairies, the Native American – coming together to create the perfect tee-shirt: soft, baggy, and frivolous. Each clings to the body in the right places, and hangs blasé along the curves. There’s simply something special about it that makes it so desirable – that something that might just take us into Californian dreams and the summers we long for as we go about our daily lives.

Shoes and Clothes and Drinks...

What’s that you say? As a Fashion Design Magjor, during my time at University I studied his work, derived inspiration from him, and wanted to be him.

In the fashion community, we have admired him for years- 20 to be exact- and now we can all relish in his designs of the past two decades, throughout the summer!

Originating in the designer's home city of Antwerp in early 200- the exhibition has been taken on the road and will run from 3 June to 5 September in the Embankment Gallery at the Somerset House, London.

Ranging from sneakers and bags to garments with outlandish shoulder pads, the exhibit promises to be an inspiring one. I shied away from lilac and lavender lipstick trend of last summer – for good reason – and vowed to stay away from whatever crazy color would come along the following year.

But of course, I rendered myself hypocritical once coral lips, ranging from the pinker to the orange shades, debuted on runways and editorials all over. There’s something fresh, yet sensual, about the shade. It’s universally flattering, the creamier pastel version stunning on a pale complexion and the brighter hue on tanned summer skin making it undeniably wearable, and yet a venture into the land of statement lip colors. The coral lipstick is this summer’s beauty version of fashion’s LBD – a necessity for every woman for that effortless day-to-night look. By day it would be quite darling paired with tousled hair and bikini on the beach; it could easily become a statement lip to add a bit of color to an evening cocktail by the boardwalk.

Carpe diem and seize the day; give coral lipstick a try! However, in the case of 23-year-old entrepreneur, Ernest Sturm, and his business Runway Waiters, headshots could not be more appropriate. I had the pleasure to sit down with Ernest and learn about his vision to combine hot people and fashion with staffing needs at premiere events.

Although a bit younger than most CEOs this guy is a true veteran to the business scheme. At the age of 12, the Russian-native dived into the works of financial mastermind, Robert Kiyosaki, and since then hasn’t looked back from his endeavors. As a seasoned and signed model that has been featured in television and the pages of Vogue, Sturm found the inspiration to bring out the business side of modeling.

With an understanding of the struggles behind finding modeling work, he wanted to create a workplace for models during their down-time. Whether in simple, sleek black uniforms or garnished by the works of designer clients the carefully hand-picked staff can range from anything to bartenders to go-go dancers. In addition to the practical purpose of the staff, Sturm has created a business that allows models to network and expose their talents to people otherwise unreachable.

Sturm has for sure proved the success of the old mantra of Hollywood: “It’s who you know”. Barely six months old, his collection of gorgeous men and women, have made appearances at events thrown by high-profile clients such as Armani Exchange, the William Morris Grammy Party, and Ugly Betty creator, Silvio Horta. Ernest finished off our conversation perfectly with the words “Create, don’t compete!” – his advice on how to avoid disappointments in the business world. I was totally impressed with his attitude and see great things for RunwayWaiters.com as he makes way to expand to Vegas and New York City. (photo of Ernest courtesy of Matthew Mitchell)

Tin Hearts Take Over London!

Formed in early 2009 the Tin Hearts have spent the last year locked away in musical solitude, developing and honing their own brand of moody indie rock, and after seeing them Tuesday night, I am convinced.

As I watch Tin Hearts perform, I know that this hidden gem of a band is soon to go from “blog post” to “cover-of-magazine”, very shortly, as they are too hard to resist. Only a few steps down at 1740, Rhino Records re-opened for charity from May 17-30. Supported with a staff of music appreciators, the event was thrown together to support Chrysalis Enterprises, a non-profit with the goal of supporting the financially down-trodden in LA. With a calendar of stock-full of events and performances meant to be a throwback to the good days of Rhino, including the ‘60s Merry-Go-Round, and collectible items and art up for sell the crew hoped to reach a goal of $100,000. If she should feel confident in it, if it should be a garment which makes her hold her head a little higher, strut with hips swaying without a care in the world, then that is defined as sexy. But if she should feel out of place, exposed, or vulnerable, then she has misinterpreted sexuality. Sexuality lies not in the degree of body-conscious apparel or the length of one’s skirt. Nor is it dressing to appeal to the animalistic qualities of men, or to rouse envy in women.

Embracing sexuality is finding oneself, and one’s unabashedness in being herself. And being sexy need not be limited to lacy little numbers or bandage dresses à la Hervé Leger. Touches of androgyny are equally provocative – if not more so. Unconventional, yes, but the mysterious effects of a man’s shirt worn over a lace black bra, or Doc Martens worn with knit skirts cannot be denied. It is the je-ne-sais-quoi element from that nonchalant way of throwing a sheer button-up, oversized and wrinkled, over denim or leggings that holds such a strong appeal.

Canadian brand Pink Cobra epitomizes this type of sexiness with androgyny. The designer behind the four years and eight seasons since Pink Cobra’s debut is Tania Martin, who cannot be better described than one who “walks softly and carries a leather whip.” Her cutting-edge designs juxtapose classic pieces with bold twists ensures that “the woman who wears Pink Cobra wields an arsenal of sexually-charged weaponry." Clad in a jersey bodycon dress with an oil-slick of a cape, or wool trousers with a sharp leather vest, the look is classic, but innovative; feminine, yet masculine – all in two colors or less. Martin designs with one woman, and one woman only in mind: the powerhouse woman with an inexorable and uninhibited vision in a man’s world.

Spotlight: LONG Clothing

London has been lucky enough to get the first taste of LONG Clothing and that taste is sweet! Seems like a mismatch, but this actually made for a really good event called DANCEiSM—a monthly dance party split between USC and LMU that just celebrated its second anniversary this year. Obnoxiousness aside, every month I encountered a fun collection of fashion met with bright accessories and glow sticks; the neon paint station was always a hit and was a great ice breaker to get that object of affection to be more “hands-on”. Young local DJ’s, including Ben Orpstu, ROBOT LOVE, and the handsome ///BONES from the Gotta Dance Dirty crew always spun a good mixture of beats from fun remixes to the increasingly popular dubstep.

This event is really good alternative to a full-fledged rave if you’re looking to meet cute, young people while showing off ridiculous style. Although DANCEiSM will be taking a break from it’s “intimate” setting until the fall, DANCEiSM will be crawling out of the hipster dusted Echo Park for the summer to co-create “Hi Up” summer rooftop pool parties at The Standard hotel in Downtown LA alongside BBE. Slap on some sunscreen and throw on some shades!

-Brian

MONKI says, MONKI do?

I'm almost ashamed to admit that my first screen name was something along the lines of qtmonki; it was, after all, the early 2000’s (when intentional misspellings and shortening of words was cool), thus rendering it excusable. Coming across Swedish brand and boutique Monki, Weekday’s little sister brand, made me feel much better. And prophetic, even.

But that’s all quite irrelevant. Monki is one of the few brands with an aesthetic of its own; it presents the fun, quirky side of fashion that most brands ignore and sacrifice for the sake of commercial normality. It’s lighthearted and playful, yet a bit dark - almost like a step into the pages of Alice in Wonderland with garden tea parties galore, and an unexplored depth of dark humor. Massive jumpers in eccentric patterns, floral prints, flower clips, Wang-inspired pullovers, and teddies of the brand’s mascot creature line the insides of the stores.

Monki isn’t simply a brand or a store concept, though. It’s a lifestyle and a statement in this world of fashion – the store displays tell a story, and the clothes represent individuality, personality, and independence. “An alternate,” as Monki says, “that’s full of dreams.”

-Kim
